TU Graz Achieves 42% Efficiency in PEM Electrolyser Research

October 8, 2025

Researchers at Graz University of Technology have reported a significant efficiency improvement in proton exchange membrane electrolyser technology.

A team at TU Graz's Institute of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technology has demonstrated a 42% system efficiency rate in their latest PEM electrolyser prototype — a 6-point improvement over the previous benchmark. The findings, published in Energy & Environmental Science, open pathways for scalable green hydrogen production. Korean partners at KIST have expressed strong interest in co-developing the next generation stack.
